| Description | The Dongfeng-5 (DF-5), also known as the CSS-4, is China’s first ICBM, capable of reaching targets across the continental United States. A two-stage, liquid-fueled missile, the DF-5 is silo-based and carries a single, large nuclear warhead. While its liquid fuel requirement limits its responsiveness, the DF-5 significantly enhances China’s strategic deterrent capabilities. Modernized variants, such as the DF-5A and DF-5B, have been developed with improved accuracy and the potential for multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRVs), increasing its effectiveness and complexity. |
